Best Linux Distro for Light Gaming on an Older Laptop

I'm looking to switch from Windows to Linux because I'm fed up with how annoying Windows has become. My laptop has an NVIDIA M980 GPU, and while it's from 2016 and can handle light gaming, I'm not expecting too much performance. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the complexity of Linux and would appreciate recommendations on which distribution to install. Also, could someone explain what 'distro' means and give me the lowdown on what Proton is?

Proton is a compatibility tool that lets you run Windows games on Linux without needing a native version from the game publisher. For your situation, I'd suggest Linux Mint, especially the XFCE Edition since it's lightweight and perfect for older laptops.

Totally agree with this recommendation!

You might also want to check out MX Linux. It’s user-friendly and can run from a live USB, but remember that it might be slower than a regular installation.
