Best Linux Distros for a Tech-Savvy Newbie?

Hey everyone! I'm thinking about making the switch to Linux. I've been a lifelong Windows user and I've also dabbled in MacOS for about five years. The recent drama around Windows and PewDiePie didn't sway me towards Linux, but my Steam Deck really got me interested. I'm pretty tech-savvy—I hope! I use my PC for everything: daily tasks like videos and email, gaming strictly through Steam, and even a bit of game development on the side. My gaming experience involves everything from retro games to new titles, and I also want to explore emulation. I'm aware I have an Nvidia 30 series GPU, which I've heard might cause some issues. Most of my game dev work is with software that's already open-source, but I do have Unity Hub, VS Code, and Unreal Engine in my toolkit. I've seen mixed results with Unreal on Linux, so I'm considering sticking with Windows for that one. I'm leaning towards a more minimal setup rather than something bloated with unwanted features. Any recommendations for a good Linux distro that fits my needs? Thanks in advance!

You might want to start with Bazzite. It's pretty user-friendly and has a good focus on gaming. Also, check out that list of distros specifically for gaming and general use; it could really help you narrow it down!

Bazzite is definitely set up nicely for gaming! It includes emulator support for PS1 and PS2. If you dig deeper, there are tons of different emulators available to try out.

Mint or Endeavour are great choices! You could also look into Nobara or Garuda—they’ve been getting good reviews for gaming as well. Try a couple and see which one feels right for you.

Check out the distro selection page on the Linux4Noobs wiki for more tailored advice. Just remember to make backups often, experiment in a virtual machine first, and be cautious with any commands!
