Best Method to Run Ethernet Cable Through Walls

I'm trying to run an Ethernet cable through my wall and ceiling to reach my unfinished laundry room. There's a coaxial cable already in place that I'm planning to follow through the same holes in the studs, but there's this small metal box around the coaxial cable inside the wall. Should I just cut a new hole or is it better to unscrew the metal box?

You might want to consider using a MOCA device, which can convert coaxial to Ethernet. If your coaxial is already in the laundry room, that could be the easiest and fastest option.

I’d recommend unscrewing the box first. That way you can see what it’s actually doing. And here’s a handy tip: tie your new cable to the end of the coaxial, so when you're pulling it out, it helps guide the new cable into place. Just make sure the old cable isn’t nailed down!

As a cable tech, I find that running a new path is usually way easier than trying to work with existing cables. Do you have the right tools like push rods or a flexible drill bit? Sometimes homes just have frustrating layouts with horizontal studs.

If you’re using the coax cable, it could make a great pull cord for your new cable, plus you can use it as an access for future changes.

It’s really up to you! If the box has knockouts, just knock one out or drill a hole. You could also just make a hole in the drywall next to it and run your cable through there, it works just as well.
