I'm trying to pick a Ryzen CPU within my £400 budget. I currently have an RTX 5070 and game at 1080p with plans to upgrade to a 1440p 165Hz monitor soon. My primary games include competitive titles like Marvel Rivals, Siege, and Valorant, and I occasionally play games like Minecraft, Satisfactory, and Elden Ring. Here are the CPUs I'm considering:
- Ryzen 7 7700 for £244
- Ryzen 7 7700X for £256
- Ryzen 7 9700X for £290
- Ryzen 5 7600X3D for £320 (currently in stock)
- Ryzen 7 7800X3D for £385
The 9800X3D is too expensive for me to consider. I'm really looking for a CPU that can achieve consistent 165+fps in competitive games at 1080p and then at 1440p. Is the Ryzen 7700 or the 9700X good enough for that, or should I invest in the 7600X3D or 7800X3D? I've heard mixed opinions about whether 6 cores are sufficient for gaming, especially since I usually have multiple applications open while gaming. My current CPU is a 5600X, which has been fine for me. I'm also aiming for a build that lasts over 6 years without needing much upgrade aside from the GPU. What would you suggest?

For 1080p, the CPU matters a bit less than at 1440p since higher resolutions typically use more GPU power. I think you shouldn't overspend on the CPU. The 7700X or 9700X would work well. If you want to future-proof and can find the 7800X3D at a good price, I'd say go for that; it'll handle any GPU in the market well.
You should check out some comparison videos. Search for 'Ryzen 7 7700X vs 7600X vs 9700X' on YouTube, then also look for 'Ryzen 7600X3D vs 7800X3D'. This way, you can see actual benchmarks that compare price to performance. After that, you can make a more informed choice based on what you find.
Definitely consider getting the 7800X3D if you can swing it; it’s a solid investment if you're looking for something that will last 6+ years, especially for competitive FPS gaming.
Since the 9800X3D is out of your budget, I'd suggest going with the 7800X3D as your next best option!
If you're focusing on gaming, I'd lean towards the 7800X3D. The extra L3 cache really boosts gaming performance. If you weren't gaming seriously, then the 7700X or 9700X would also be good, depending on your core needs and thermal performance.
