I'm looking to upgrade my PC setup to start gaming at 1440p, but financially, moving to AM5 isn't an option for me right now. Here's my current hardware:
- Motherboard: ASUS Tuf b450 ii
- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x
- GPU: RTX 3060
- RAM: T-Force Vulcan DDR4 (32GB total)
- Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital
- SSD: 500GB
- PSU: Corsair RMX series 850 Watt
I'm considering buying a Ryzen 7 5800x from a friend for $70 and maybe upgrading my GPU to an RTX 5070. Any advice on the best upgrade path?

Focus on upgrading the video card first. The 5800X is decent, but it runs hot, so make sure you have a solid cooler for it. Still, I think the GPU will yield better results initially.
Honestly, you should keep the 5600x for now. Once you get the RTX 5070, you can sell your 3060 and enjoy gaming. Upgrading beyond that is going to cost a lot more than just $500 for a significant boost.
I’d recommend upgrading your GPU before your CPU. As you increase the resolution, the CPU becomes less of a bottleneck. I'm running a similar setup with a 5600 and a 4070 Ti, and it performs great at 3440x1440. If you stick to your 5600, you'll see a noticeable difference with a new GPU at 1440p!
Totally agree! I have a 5600x paired with a 6700xt, and I’m hitting 100+ fps on high settings for games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider. A new GPU would do wonders for your gaming experience at 1440p.
Thanks for the insights! I'm aiming for a 165Hz monitor, so I need solid performance—appreciate the feedback!
Consider getting a new monitor first and stick with the RTX 3060 for now. Once you get a feel for gaming at 1440p, then upgrade to either the RTX 5070 or RX 9070. The 8 core CPU is nice, but it won't radically improve your gaming performance at that resolution.

Good to know! I have a water cooler right now, so I’m covered there. Just weighing if the 5800x is worth it over the 5600x.
