Best Ways to Mount a Monitor Arm on a Desk with Limited Space

I'm trying to figure out how to mount a monitor arm on my customized desk, which is built into the wall. Unfortunately, there's no space to mount anything in the back, and I can't drill since there are shelves on top. I really don't want to ruin the desk with any holes, especially if I decide to move my setup later. I'm considering mounting the arm at the front of the desk, but I'm unsure if it will extend enough for comfortable use or if it will be too intrusive. Another option I thought of is clamping it to the top shelf, which is about a meter above the desk. This would mean the monitor hangs upside down from the shelf, and I'm worried about whether it can extend low enough for my needs, plus I have concerns about the shelf being sturdy enough to support the weight. I'd love to hear any suggestions about brands that offer long monitor arms or alternative mounting options!

It might be best if you consider wall mounting your monitor. Not only does it save desk space, but if anything goes wrong, it's easier to fix a wall than your custom desk. If you have to go with the front mount, I recommend checking out monitor arms designed specifically for smaller monitors. They might have the extension you need without taking up too much of your desk real estate. If neither option works, sometimes sticking to a regular monitor stand can save you a lot of hassle!

I think you're right about the wall mount! I’ll check into options that are made for small monitors as well.

I totally feel your struggle! Since mounting in the back of your desk isn't an option, try placing the monitor arm on the side of the desk if possible. It might save you space in front that you need. Another thing to consider is creating a standard grommet hole in your desk, then you can install an arm that bolts through it, which is more secure and leaves you with clean surfaces. If you're leaning towards the top shelf, just make sure it’s sturdy enough to handle the monitor's weight and height adjustments. The wall-mounted option is a smart backup too! Sometimes it’s just easier to wall mount rather than risking damage to the desk.

Thanks for the tips! Really helpful. I'll definitely look into that grommet hole option.

Just a tip: if the desk is too long, having it off-center may not look right with the rest of your setup. Solid advice to explore those wall mounts or maybe even find a way to mount on the shelf if it's strong enough. It's all about finding that balance between practicality and aesthetics!

Yeah, aesthetics are important! I'm definitely looking into making the setup look good while also being functional.
