Best Ways to Store and Share Family Digital Files?

Hey everyone! I'm looking for some solid advice on how to securely store and easily share our family digital files. We have a mix of Macs and PCs. My main concern is that if something were to happen to me, I'd like my wife to have quick access to all our important documents. Right now, I'm using iCloud since I'm a Mac user, but it's tricky for her to access them directly because my Apple ID is tied up with two-factor authentication. She has her own Apple ID and is part of our Apple Family, but I don't think Apple lets us share iCloud files easily. Would switching everything to OneDrive be a better idea? Or are there other options I might not have thought of? I'd really appreciate any help or tips you can share. Thanks!

Most cloud services let you share folders with other users, giving them full access to everything inside. Services like iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox all offer this, although iCloud can be tricky depending on account permissions. Make sure to follow the 3-2-1 backup rule: keep three copies of your data on two different media, and one should be offsite. This setup can include a couple of USB hard drives along with your cloud storage. A NAS is also a solid option if you want something more permanent and feature-rich. Plus, you might find that some routers even allow you to connect a USB drive directly for sharing without needing a full NAS.

You might want to consider setting up a NAS (Network-Attached Storage). It’s a great way to keep files accessible for everyone in the family, and it can be set up to access remotely as well. I use Unraid for mine, and once it’s up and running, it can be super user-friendly. Just remember to keep backups with another service or a physical drive somewhere safe, just in case something goes wrong!
