Bluetooth Issues on Surface Laptops: Disappearing Icon and Disconnects

I've been using Surface laptops in our organization for about four years now, and they've been pretty great overall – fewer support tickets regarding PC problems, until recently. We've started facing a stubborn issue where Bluetooth completely disappears on multiple Surface devices. Users have experienced symptoms like the Bluetooth icon vanishing from the system tray, the Bluetooth toggle disappearing from Settings, and their Bluetooth keyboard and mouse disconnecting, leaving them stuck. A reboot can fix it temporarily, but we've tried everything from rolling back Windows updates to updating drivers and firmware without a permanent solution. I'm curious if anyone else is experiencing these Bluetooth dropout issues on Surface laptops, specifically concerning the models and whether you are using Windows 10 or 11. Any insights on a potential root cause or fix would be greatly appreciated!

The symptoms you’re experiencing definitely scream driver issues. Have you been keeping your Bluetooth drivers up to date? It might be worth trying to roll back to earlier versions instead of having the latest, since sometimes newer drivers aren't stable. And if you're not already checking for updates through the Windows Update Catalog, that can be a gold mine for newer drivers that might not show up in the regular Windows update. Just search for your Bluetooth's hardware ID and download the latest from there.

Sounds like one of those classic Microsoft scenarios where they think their products fix themselves. Have you checked if the affected devices share the same Bluetooth chipset? Sometimes specific drivers from manufacturers like Qualcomm or Intel create inconsistencies. Don't forget to look in Device Manager for any error codes when the issue occurs; it might just be a resource conflict that a reboot temporarily resolves. Disabling fast startup could also help, but it sounds like a deeper firmware issue needs addressing here.

Good point! I've seen a few cases where chipset issues cause weird behavior like this. It's frustrating, but if this is affecting devices across different models, Microsoft support might have to step up to the plate.

Right? If Dell laptops aren't having this problem, it might just be that Surface devices have unresolved firmware bugs.

First off, might wanna look at the antivirus or endpoint detection tools you're using; they can mess with Bluetooth functionality. Also, given that you mentioned some users are overheating their devices, make sure their Surfaces aren’t being pushed too hard. Overheating can definitely impact performance, especially with Bluetooth.

I've dealt with a similar Bluetooth headache before. A lot of times, Trend Micro’s endpoint protection can conflict with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers... Have you considered that? There could be other things on your network too, so keep an eye out for that.
