Budget-Friendly PC Upgrade for My Grandparents

I'm looking to upgrade my grandparents' old Windows Vista machine, which takes over 10 minutes to boot up. They mainly use it for web browsing and checking emails. They asked me to build a new PC for them, and I want to keep the total cost under $500. I found some extra RAM and a WiFi card to use, and I've put together a build that currently costs around $353.94. I'd love to hear thoughts on whether these components are suitable for their needs, or if I should spend a bit more to enhance the build. Here's what I'm considering: CPU: Ryzen 3 3200G, Mobo: Asrock B450M/ac R2.0, RAM: G Skill Ripjaws 2x16gb DDR4 3600, Storage: Patriot P300 512gb, Case: Phanteks XT Pro, and Power Supply: MSI MAG A650BN.

If you're sticking with the old Vista machine for now, just switching out the hard drive for a SATA SSD is a budget-friendly option that could make a huge difference in speed without breaking the bank.

Your build looks solid, but if you're aiming for future-proofing, consider upgrading to a Ryzen 5700G for about $125 used. Also, a new PSU like the Asrock pro750G is affordable and highly rated – it's a good move for ensuring power efficiency!

Thanks for the tips! I'll look into the 5700G.

I’d recommend getting a smaller case and investing a bit more into the CPU; the 3200G might struggle with basic tasks. You could trim back on other components and go for a 5600GT instead. Also, you may not need the separate WiFi card if your motherboard has built-in WiFi.

Mini PCs are definitely worth considering, especially since they come with warranties and are compact. But if it means a lot for you to build it yourself for them, that personal touch could make a difference!

Totally true! They'd appreciate something built specifically for them.

Have you thought about a mini PC? I got a Beelink Ser5 for my parents, and it works like a charm for basic tasks. It might be a good alternative, though prices can fluctuate.

That’s a great idea! Also, an older Optiplex could work well.
