Can a Damaged Ethernet Cable Still Work but at a Lower Speed?

I recently installed a new Cat 8 Ethernet cable for my Nvidia Shield, and it was showing speeds of 1000mbps. However, I accidentally stapled into the cable while trying to secure it, and now the speed is only 100mbps. I'm not sure if this damage is the reason for the reduced speed, or if it would still function normally. Should I get a new cable, or is there a chance this one could still work?

If you've lost a wire from the cable, it's normal for it to negotiate down to a slower speed. It's still functioning, but not reliably. I suggest getting a new one, and maybe look for a CAT6 for better reliability—Cat 8 might not even be necessary for everyday use.

For 100mbps connections, only two pairs of wires are needed from the cable. If you've hurt the other pairs, it could fall back to this lower speed. Just be careful—damage can degrade performance even more over time! A new cable would be your best bet.

Wired Ethernet connections negotiate speed based on how many working wires are intact. If a couple of wires are damaged, it might settle at 100mbps. You got lucky that it still works at all! But yeah, a new cable is definitely recommended for stable connections.

Exactly! It's surprising any connection works after damaging it, but better safe than sorry. I'd say replace it.

Yes, if you've damaged the cable, it's likely the reason for the drop in speed. An Ethernet cable consists of multiple pairs of wires, and a staple could cut through a pair or two. If that happens, the cable may still function but will downgrade to a lower speed, like 100mbps instead of 1000mbps. It's better to replace the cable to ensure optimal performance.

Absolutely! If you're losing pairs, it can only handle 100mbps. It's worth investing in a new cable, especially since you want to avoid further issues.

Yup, new cable time! And for your next setup, try using cable clips or zip ties instead of staples to avoid this issue. Staples can cause all sorts of problems. Trust me, it’s not worth it!
