Can a Minecraft mod in a jar file contain malware?

I'm exploring different Minecraft servers and I often come across ones that require me to download a jar file to install mods for playing. I'm wondering if it's safe to run these files? I'm using Windows 11 with just Windows Defender and real-time protection active, and I typically play Minecraft through SKlauncher.

For sure! If the jar file isn't from a reputable site with plenty of downloads and positive reviews, it's a big risk to run it. Malware like Trojans often hides in these files.

Yes, jar files are executable and they can definitely contain malware. It's best to avoid downloading and running jar files from sources you're not familiar or comfortable with.

Anything executable has the potential to run malware, especially if it’s designed to do so. Just be cautious with what you decide to run!

Basically, a jar file is just a container for Java code, similar to a zip file. If you execute the Java code inside, it could potentially cause harm, so always be careful!
