Can an Old Router Slow Down My LAN Speeds?

I'm trying to understand if using an older router can limit my LAN speeds. My dad and I are both connected via Ethernet—starting from the modem in the basement, it goes into a router in the kitchen, which then connects to a switch and our computers. I typically get around 65 Mbps when using Ethernet and 50 Mbps over WiFi, but our internet plan is 350 Mbps. When I plug directly into the modem, I can reach the full 350 Mbps. My dad mentioned that our router is about 15 years old and wasn't high-end back then. So, can an old router bottleneck my LAN speeds, and would getting a new one help? Thanks!

You're spot on; if it's an older router, it's likely limited to 100 Mbps. Most modern routers support 1 Gbps, so upgrading would definitely give you a better performance boost. Just make sure to check the specs of any new router you're considering to confirm it supports those speeds!

Definitely! A router that's 15 years old probably has 10/100 Mbps ports, which can restrict your speeds. Also, if you're using outdated Ethernet cables like Cat-5, they're only capable of supporting up to 100 Mbps. Upgrading your router and cables could help you reach those higher speeds!

I checked my cables and found I have a Cat5e going from the modem to the router and a Cat6 running to the switch upstairs. Should be all good there!

Yes, an old router can bottleneck your speeds for sure. Sometimes the lights on the switch can tell you if the connection to the router is at GB or 100 Mbps—definitely worth checking!

I looked up my router model (Linksys EA6100) and found out it only has 10/100 ports. Turns out my dad wasn't being totally honest about its age. It's only 11 years old!
