Can I Build a Successful Career in Tech Without a College Degree?

I'm about to graduate from high school and I'm starting to feel uncertain about my future. My entrance exam for university didn't go well, and I've heard some negative feedback about the college experience. I have a few plans: if I get accepted, I'll go to college; if not, maybe a private college (but that's tricky due to my family's finances); or I could try again next year for entrance exams. My main interest, though, is to self-study programming and obtain online developer certifications instead of pursuing college.

My ultimate goal is to secure a corporate developer job and eventually become an indie developer focusing on games and web applications. I have a few questions about this path:
1. How feasible is it to succeed in the tech job market without a degree? Will online certifications really give me a fair chance against those who have degrees?
2. If pursuing certifications is a good idea, what resources or platforms would you recommend? I heard about Free Code Camp's Fullstack certification, but what about options for game development or cybersecurity, which I'm also interested in?
3. Typically, how long does it take to complete a certification course? I understand it varies by individual, but a general timeframe would help me persuade my parents that these certifications are worthwhile.
4. Should I follow a structured learning path, or is it more effective just to learn based on my interests? I've started with the basics of Object-Oriented Programming, having touched on it during my self-study with Java, but I haven't gone deep into it due to my busy project schedule this year.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Honestly, the odds aren't great right now for getting into the industry without a degree and experience. A few years back, you might have had a better shot. Now, if you go in without anything solid on your resume, it feels like you're up against a wall. I'd recommend still pursuing a job in another field while building your skills on the side. Who knows, in a couple of years, the job market might shift in your favor.

Absolutely possible! The key is to focus on creating real projects. Many self-taught developers land jobs because they can showcase their work on platforms like GitHub. Certifications can provide structure, but a portfolio demonstrating what you can build is what employers really care about. Go for it!

Don't lose hope! Success can come from various paths. It's all about hard work. Cultivate a strong network, understand market needs, be adaptable, and address real problems with your skills. If you can integrate learning with real-world applications, like working on small projects or helping others, you'll build a strong foundation and more opportunities will come your way.

It's tough out there. Certifications don’t hold as much weight as they used to because you can find a lot of the same information for free online. Plus, positions in corporate environments often expect a degree as a minimum requirement. Still, I'd say don't let that discourage you! Focus on building a solid portfolio of projects—it can often speak louder than a degree.
