Can I clean install Windows on an SSD after removing it from my laptop?

My laptop's charger port has failed, and I want to donate it to a nonprofit organization that fixes them up for seniors and students. Since I can't power it on, I'm wondering if I can wipe the drive and clean install Windows by removing the SSD and using an external USB SSD enclosure. I did try replacing the battery, and while the laptop powered on for a bit, it wouldn't charge. Can anyone guide me on whether this is possible?

For sure, just wipe it clean! But installing Windows might be better left until the charging issue is sorted. That way, you know the system will be stable when you transfer it.

No problem at all if your SSD is removable! You should be able to wipe it easily and use it with another machine. Just remember, if it's soldered in, that's another story—but most Windows laptops have replaceable SSDs.

Wiping the SSD is straightforward, but I’d suggest holding off on installing Windows until the laptop is fixed. It’s usually not the best idea to set up the OS on one machine and then move the drive to another.

Absolutely, you can definitely connect your SSD to another computer using an enclosure! Just make sure you have the correct type of enclosure that matches your SSD, whether it's SATA or M.2.
