I lost my iPhone after leaving it in a public bathroom for about half an hour. I suspect someone took it, and while I didn't have 'Find My iPhone' enabled, I do have AppleCare for theft and loss. I'm wondering if I can still file a theft claim. Also, if I go ahead with the claim, will that lock the phone so the person who might have stolen it can't use it? I just want to make sure they can't get a free phone out of this situation.

If you file a theft claim, the phone will be blacklisted, making it unusable with any carriers. However, the thief could still access Wi-Fi and other features that don’t require cellular service. Just a heads up though, since 'Find My iPhone' wasn’t enabled on your device, Apple might deny your claim altogether since it’s a requirement for their theft coverage.
Thanks for the info! I really regret my oversight, but luckily, it wasn't a brand new phone. I'm just hoping Apple can verify the account was deleted around the time it was stolen, but I know it could be hard to prove.
