Can I Get a Programming Job Without a Degree?

I'm looking to break into the programming field but I don't have a degree in this area. A friend who's been a software developer for five years told me it's possible to land a job without one, especially if I learn JavaScript and its libraries. He suggested that I should build a strong portfolio with real-world projects. I've also seen many job listings that don't require degrees but do ask for experience, which has me a bit worried. What else should I learn to boost my chances of getting hired? Are there alternative paths into the programming industry beyond the traditional degree route? My background is non-programming; I've taken a C programming course in college and worked with Kuka Robotics Language, but that's about it. I did some programming as a kid in various languages like Python, C++, and Java, but I've forgotten a lot and haven't been active in programming lately. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, it's definitely possible to get a programming job without a degree, but it can be tough. You'll need to rely on personal projects to get your foot in the door, especially for your first job. If you're passionate and dedicated about programming, it'll be easier. If not, it can be quite challenging.

I totally agree! I was just lounging around but now I feel motivated to spend my free time learning to program. Thanks for the push!
