I'm looking to replace a family member's HDD with an SSD, but they live quite far away and are only visiting for a bit. I was thinking about installing Fedora on a spare SSD I have and then giving it to them so they can just swap the drives and boot Linux on their laptop. Is this feasible?

You might need to do some adjustments after they install the SSD. Issues like disabling Secure Boot and changing the BIOS boot order could come up. It’s usually not too tough for someone with some Linux experience, but a complete beginner might find it a bit challenging.
In theory, yes, you can do that! As long as their laptop can boot from the SSD, especially if it’s a modern machine. Just keep in mind there might be some minor tweaks needed once the SSD is in their laptop. My experience with switching SD cards on Chromebooks shows it can work but isn’t always seamless.
I've moved installed systems between different hardware and had mixed results. Sometimes it worked even with different setups, but there were also times I expected it to work and it didn’t, especially with similar models that had slight variations. Just make sure to take hardware differences into account when installing.
