Can I Install Linux on a Second SSD Without Wiping It?

I have a laptop with two SSDs, and I'm using the second one for storage like games and coding programs. I'm considering installing Linux Mint to dual boot with Windows, but I don't want to erase the data on my second drive. My goal is to test Linux out before fully switching from Windows 11. Is it possible to keep the data on the second SSD while installing Linux, and if so, how can I do that?

You can install Linux on either SSD, but doing it on the main boot drive could improve performance. Using a distro with a Calamares installer will give you an 'install alongside' option which can help you shrink the Windows partition to make room for Linux and set up a new bootloader. Just ensure you're careful during the partitioning step!

Yes, you can definitely install Linux on your second SSD without wiping it. Most Linux distributions offer an option to resize your existing partitions. That way, you can create space for Linux on the second SSD without losing any of your data. Just make sure not to select any option that mentions deleting partitions. It's key to choose the 'use existing partition' or 'install alongside' option during the setup.

For others looking to learn, a quick Google or YouTube search for 'dual boot Linux with two drives' can provide a lot of walkthroughs. Just be cautious with the instructions; some tutorials suggest erasing data which you definitely want to avoid if you're like me and have files you don’t want to lose. Just ensure you select the right options when installing!
