Hey everyone, I recently upgraded to a new gaming rig and I'm planning to use one of my old SSDs, which has all my games and files on it, but doesn't have Windows installed. My new motherboard has only one SSD slot, and I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to install Windows 11 using a USB flash drive without losing any of my existing data. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated!

You might actually want to check your motherboard's manual again; it could have more than one M.2 slot. But if it really only has one slot, then the safest method is to back up your data first, wipe the drive, install Windows, and then bring back your files afterward. Just make sure to have everything saved elsewhere before you begin.

One option is to get an M.2 NVMe to USB adapter. This lets you have both drives connected at once: first, boot from your current Windows drive, then transfer all the data you want to keep onto the SSD you plan to install Windows on. After that, you can safely wipe it, install Windows, and then copy everything back. It's a bit of a process, but it's the safest way to avoid data loss.

Before making any changes, always back up your data just to be safe! Generally, installing Windows will require you to wipe the drive, which means losing your files. It's usually best to secure erase the SSD, install Windows, and then move your files back after the setup. If your SSD has multiple partitions, you might be able to keep your files, but it's risky and can lead to data loss if something goes wrong.
