Hey everyone! I recently started a new job as the sole IT admin in a small food store. The previous admin left behind a pretty messy setup with Windows Server 2012 R2, but I've heard there's a possible upgrade to 2016. My question is whether I can effectively manage Windows desktops while using Linux myself, possibly running Debian on the servers. I've looked into Samba since I know it's an option, but I've heard mixed things about its capabilities, especially regarding domain management for users. I'd appreciate any insights or experiences you all might have! Thanks!

You can definitely make it work! Just know that switching to Debian can complicate management. You won't have direct access to group policies or Active Directory. If the existing infrastructure is Windows-based, it's easier to stick with that unless you’re ready for a complete overhaul. Maybe looking into SaaS solutions could save costs too.
Honestly, if you're looking to upgrade, consider Windows Server 2016. Just a heads up, mainstream support ended in 2022, but extended support lasts until 2027, so you still have some time.
Just be aware that sticking to an unsupported OS might have its risks!
Avoid using Samba as a domain controller for Windows systems. If they have specific needs, consider going cloud-based like Intune. If they really need a server, go for Server 2025 instead and skip 2016, it's not worth it.
Upgrade sounds like a good idea! That setup definitely needs some love.
