Hey everyone! I'm diving into the world of Linux, specifically Cinnamon Mint since it's pretty beginner-friendly. I've got this old laptop from a garage sale, and I'm really enjoying it. I'm hoping to switch my main gaming PC to Linux in the future. However, I've heard that Fortnite is off-limits on Linux due to its anti-cheat system. My question is this: can I set up a virtual machine to run Windows inside Linux so I can play Fortnite and other games that aren't supported on Linux? Is this a viable option? Appreciate your insights! 🙂

If your laptop supports hardware virtualization, you can definitely install QEMU to run Windows in a VM. The performance will be pretty close to running Windows natively, but it's crucial to note that Fortnite won't work due to the anti-cheat measures.
Unfortunately, using a virtual machine to play Fortnite is a no-go. The game’s developers perform checks to identify VMs and simply won’t allow you to play. Some users have even reported being banned for trying. Your best bet is to either dual-boot with Windows or run Linux in a VM instead, if that suits your needs.
You can create a virtual machine for Windows, but be warned that there will be a performance hit since you’re simulating a whole computer. Plus, Fortnite's anti-cheat system often blocks VMs, meaning you could run into issues.
But if it can work in a VM, isn't there a chance it could run on Proton as well? Or am I missing something?
Yeah, I've tried that, and you definitely can't play Fortnite in a VM. It's just not going to happen.
