Can I recover lost data from my HDD?

I've seemingly lost all the data on one of my personal hard drives. Here's what happened: I disconnected it, connected a new one, performed some analysis, and then reconnected the old hard drive. Each time, I made sure to power off the computer and used the same SATA cable. Now, the old hard drive has the same name as the new one I briefly connected. The first time I booted up, it indicated that there was 200GB used, but I couldn't see any of my old files. This was the hard drive that held my Desktop files, and it seems like it just created an empty Desktop folder instead. On the second boot, Windows detected issues with that drive and "repaired" it, but now it shows only 1GB used instead of the 200GB. I've tried checking the cables, renaming the hard drive, changing the drive letter, and using the chkdsk command. It feels like the data might still be there but just isn't being referenced.

It's possible to experience data loss even when the computer is powered off, especially if it wasn't fully shut down properly. Always ensure drives are properly unmounted before disconnecting them to avoid issues like this.

Yes, there’s a good chance you can still recover your data! Using data recovery software can often help restore what seems lost. Just make sure not to write anything new on that drive, as it might overwrite the existing data.

As for what likely caused this issue, it could be related to the 'fast startup' feature. When you shut down with fast startup enabled, Windows doesn’t fully shut down — it just logs you off and hibernates. This means that connected drives might not be properly unmounted, leading to potential data corruption. To prevent this, it's best to perform a complete shutdown. You can do this by holding 'Shift' and clicking shut down or by using the command prompt command "shutdown /s /t 0".
