Can I Recover My Linux OS After Installing Windows?

I switched to Linux on my new PC, but I recently needed some Windows-only apps, so I installed Windows 11. Unfortunately, I mistakenly installed it on the Linux partition instead of the intended one. Now, I can't boot into Linux Mint. I've tried watching some recovery videos, but none mention how to recover the entire OS. Is there any way to get my Linux back, or am I looking at a complete reinstall?

If you're okay with reinstalling, just reinstall Mint alongside Windows. It’s usually the easiest fix. Plus, reinstalling Linux can often give you back the access to the apps you were missing before.

Make sure your boot priority is set to the GRUB bootloader instead of Windows Boot Manager. If it's still booting into Windows automatically, changing that will help. If all else fails, a reinstall can get you back on track.

It's possible that the install didn't even overwrite the partition correctly. Windows is notorious for messing up boot loaders during dual boot setups. You might want to check your BIOS settings because after installing a new OS, sometimes the boot order gets switched around. It’s a frustrating process, but there might still be hope!

Yeah, definitely check the BIOS first! Sometimes it just needs a little tweak to get back to Linux without a full reinstall.

Thanks for that! I’ll check my BIOS settings and see if that fixes it.

Unfortunately, if you accidentally installed Windows over your Linux partition, that data might be gone forever because the partition was reformatted into a different filesystem. The only way to restore Linux Mint would be to reinstall it from scratch.
