Can I Revive My 2012 iMac with an SSD and Linux for Browsing?

I have a 2012 iMac that still has its original hard drive, and I'm curious whether I can breathe new life into it. Would swapping out the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD) and installing a Linux operating system enable me to use it for basic web browsing? I'm also interested in learning some Linux and Unix commands and tools. Any advice would be appreciated!

You can definitely install an SSD. I’d suggest going for macOS 10.15 initially, then use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to upgrade to something more current if you want, like the latest version. It can work wonders!

How challenging is it to actually open up the iMac to do the upgrade? I haven't checked any tutorials yet.

Definitely go for swapping in an SSD! Someone suggested macOS Catalina, but if you want to avoid the limitations of an older Mac OS, I recommend installing Ubuntu or another Linux distribution. It usually runs smoother on older hardware, plus it’s more secure than a 7-year-old operating system. I've put Ubuntu on some old Macs, and they work great for browsing!

Ubuntu is a solid choice! Plus, if you want to keep it simple, you can boot it from a USB drive instead of replacing the hard drive entirely. Just get a USB3 thumb drive, and it should work fine.
