Can I Revive My Old Gaming Laptop?

I have an older Eurocom Sky X7C gaming laptop that's about 6 years old. It's been a solid performer, but lately, I've noticed it's starting to fail, especially the graphics card. I've been encountering random black screens that can only be fixed by forcing a shutdown and waiting a bit. It seems like the issue might be the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 card, which is supposed to handle quite a bit (it has 8GB of GDDR6 memory). I can't connect it to an external monitor when this happens either. While I know I'll eventually need to replace this laptop, I'm curious if there's anything I can do to salvage it for lighter use, especially for my kids who want to play some games on it without it being thrown away.

Sometimes it just might be an overheating issue. When you open it up, clean out the cooling system and consider reapplying thermal paste. It can help a lot! If that still doesn’t work, you might want to look into replacing or upgrading the GPU — there are options available to fit in the laptop.

If cleaning doesn’t solve the issue, how exactly would I go about replacing or upgrading the GPU in this laptop?

If the GPU is failing, you can try disabling it in the BIOS (if accessible). You'd end up using the integrated graphics, though they won’t be great for gaming. It might be a temporary fix, but worth a shot if you want to keep using the laptop for light tasks.

Just so you know, I have a manual for the laptop that specifies how to remove the GPU. It’s actually not soldered on, so you might want to check that out.
