I'm looking to set up an Ethernet connection for my PC, but my router is downstairs. Is it okay to run the Ethernet cable outside through my window? The indoor route is significantly longer—almost double the distance. What do you think would be the better option for me? Also, for my gaming setup, should I run two Ethernet cables for my PC and PS5 or just one and switch it between devices?

Running an Ethernet cable outside is possible, but it’s not ideal. Ethernet cables can handle distance quite well, with Cat6 cables losing bandwidth only after about 150 feet. However, outdoor exposure can damage them over time, so if you have to go outside, consider getting a weatherproof cable. For your gaming setup, instead of running two cables, I suggest using a powered network switch. This way, you can easily connect both your PC and PS5 with just one cable without having to physically switch them around.
Be cautious! Standard Ethernet cables are susceptible to sun and rain damage. You’d be risking your connection if you route it outside without protection. If you want to, you could buy weatherproof cables, but they’re generally pricier. In any case, getting a switch is a smart move; it allows you to connect multiple devices using just one cable.
I ran an Ethernet cable outside my parents' house in the Caribbean a couple of years ago, and it’s still working fine despite the sun and rain! But if you’re looking for longevity, it might be better to stick to the longer indoor route or invest in high-quality weatherproof solutions.
Yeah I thought so too. Welp, might as well buy double the length then!
