I'm wondering if I can connect a standalone Blu-ray player to my home network using an Ethernet cable and watch a disc on my Linux computer that's also on the same network. My setup won't allow HDMI or streaming—it's strictly Ethernet. Is this possible?

Manufacturers could add that kind of feature if they wanted, but honestly, I doubt many do. If it’s not advertised on the box, chances are you won't get it. Just keep that in mind!
Haha, nope! You won't be able to stream Blu-ray video that way. The Ethernet port is mainly for things like firmware updates and managing encryption keys, not for video playback. So, just having it connected to your network won't help you watch the disc on your computer.
Some Blu-ray players like LG's have features such as "Smart Share" that allow video broadcasting over a network, but you'd need a specific app for that, and it likely involves DRM. So, if that's something you're considering, just make sure your player supports it.
Yeah, trying to use just Ethernet for Blu-ray playback isn't really going to work. The media protection stuff like HDCP usually requires HDMI for playback.
