I had a rough accident with my laptop, and while the screen and outer shell are damaged, the motherboard still works and shows my lock screen. I'm wondering if I could take the motherboard out and install it in a different laptop. Also, how can I figure out what type of motherboard I have?

Honestly, you might not need to bother with the motherboard if you're just trying to recover your files. The hard drive has all your data. If you just want to get back your pictures, videos, and other files, pulling the hard drive out and connecting it to another computer will do the trick.
If you want to access files like those saved in Notepad or your browsing info from Google, those are also on the hard drive. Swapping motherboards can be tricky, as they often require matching components. It's usually much simpler to retrieve the hard drive instead.
