Can I Upgrade the RAM on My ASUS Laptop?

I'm looking to upgrade the RAM on my ASUS R565EA-US51T, which currently has 8GB of RAM. The ASUS website indicates that it comes with 4GB soldered on the motherboard and an additional 4GB in a SO-DIMM slot, with a maximum total memory capacity of 12GB. However, when I checked using a command prompt, it suggested that the max RAM could go up to 64GB. I'm confused about whether I can add just 4GB more or if I can replace the existing 4GB for a total of 12GB. Any help would be appreciated!

To figure out what you can do, you should check your task manager. It will show you how many slots you have used versus what’s available. If you've only got one SO-DIMM slot, then you’ll need to swap out the current RAM stick for a higher capacity one.

How do I check that?

I’ve had good luck with ASUS laptops. You can actually add a larger SO-DIMM than what they recommend, like going beyond their stated 8GB. I suggest visiting a memory retailer like crucial.com with your laptop model number to see what options are available. Just a heads up, I hear Micron is shutting down the Crucial consumer business soon.

Thanks for the tip! I just checked and it says I can buy a 16GB module.

So, since your laptop has 8 GB of RAM, it's likely that you have a 4 GB module in the SO-DIMM slot and 4 GB soldered onto the motherboard. If that's the case, you can take out the 4 GB stick and replace it with an 8 GB one, which gives you a total of 12 GB.
