I'm looking to improve my laptop's performance while waiting to build a new PC. Currently, it has 480GB of storage, and I'm considering upgrading to an SSD. I noticed a USB-C port on the left side of my laptop and wondered if I could connect a desktop SSD to this port. My laptop's USB-C port supports 5Gbps, but most SSDs are faster than that. I don't transfer a lot of files since I mainly use it for gaming, but I'm curious if this setup would work and if I could potentially use the SSD in my future PC build.

You can definitely upgrade your laptop with an SSD! If you want to detach the SSD from an enclosure for future use in your desktop, make sure you get a compatible one. However, many external SSDs are now custom-made and may not be removable as easily as before. Just double-check before buying!
Exactly! It's way more convenient to just have one SSD that works for both now and later.
If your laptop has a second M.2 slot, you should consider getting a regular M.2 NVMe SSD for it. In case there’s no extra slot, you can buy an M.2 NVMe enclosure and use a standard M.2 NVMe drive externally. That's a solid way to upgrade without being limited by your laptop's capabilities!

I get that, but that's why I'm looking into this. Buying a new SSD now just feels like wasting money if I have to get another one later.
