Can I Use a Linux PC for Storing and Transferring Files to Windows?

Hey everyone! My cousin just upgraded his computer and is giving me his old one, which I believe runs Linux Mint. I need Windows for my work, but I was thinking of using his old PC (it has 1TB of storage) to store games, books, and maybe even a copy of Wikipedia, just in case access to these things becomes tough where I live. The plan is to transfer files via a USB stick to my Windows PC whenever I want to play or read.

However, since I don't have a Windows license, I'm left with this Linux setup. Most of my games are Windows-only, and a friend mentioned that using Linux could cause issues with file integrity when transferring files to a Windows system. This got me concerned because I've moved files between computers before without issues, but I haven't done it with Windows yet. So, is this something I should really worry about?

Using that Linux PC as a Network Attached Storage (NAS) is a great idea! There are several Linux distros designed for NAS setups that might suit your purpose. Just keep in mind that downloading the actual Wikipedia could be overkill in terms of storage, but hosting a smaller version with MediaWiki would be manageable.

You can download Wikipedia without images to save space, which makes it way more doable!

Honestly, the Windows games should run fine on Linux with tools like Proton, even if they don’t have native Linux versions. Just watch out for any games with kernel-level anti-cheat systems since they can be problematic. Most games should work well though, especially if they're not using such measures.

Yeah, my RPG Maker games aren't using any anti-cheat, so they should be alright!

If you want, a simpler solution could be to take the old hard drive out and connect it directly to your Windows machine. But I guess your cousin mentioned that his drive wouldn't fit in yours?

Yep, he said it wouldn't work with my setup.
