Can I Use a MacBook Pro SSD with a PCIe Adapter on an X570 Motherboard?

I'm working with an ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming motherboard and a Ryzen 3700X CPU, and I'm trying to utilize an SSD from an old MacBook for extra storage. I've installed the SSD into a M.2-to-PCIe x1 adapter but ran into issues when booting—it displays an A2 Q-code (IDE detect fail) and doesn't respond to BIOS or Del key commands. I can get into the BIOS and Windows without the SSD installed, though. I've already tried enabling Above 4G Decoding, disabling Secure Boot, switching PCIe settings, and even clearing the CMOS and reseating the SSD. Is there a chance this SSD will ever work internally, or is it likely that the Apple controller is incompatible with my setup? Should I just stick with using an external USB enclosure? Any advice on BIOS settings, drivers, or PCIe bifurcation options that could help would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you've got a tricky situation on your hands! The issue could stem from the fact that many Mac SSDs, especially those from certain models, don’t have their own controllers and rely on the motherboard for that. If that’s the case, then unfortunately, they won’t work outside their original Mac environment. How's the SSD model? If it’s one of the M series, you're likely out of luck.

Yeah, it's the Samsung MZ-JPU512T/0A6 from a 2015 MacBook Pro. I’ve heard those have the controller integrated, so that makes a lot of sense.

You might want to check if your specific SSD model has any known hacks or compatibility notes online. Sometimes there are workarounds, though it's not guaranteed.

Are all your motherboard’s M.2 slots already in use? If not, that could be worth checking out to see if it’s just a matter of slot configuration.

Yep, sadly all the slots are occupied right now.
