Can I Use an Old Laptop HDD in a New Desktop Build?

Hey everyone! I have this old laptop that's been around for over 15 years and is pretty much on its last legs, but the data on the HDD is super important to me. I'm thinking about building a simple desktop computer just to access and read from the HDD. My goal is to keep using the same operating system and files from the old drive on this new system—kind of like giving my old laptop a fresh start with new hardware. Is that doable, or should I just accept that the information is gone? Thanks for any advice you can share!

Just a heads up: using that old HDD should be a temporary solution. Make sure to back everything up to a newer drive once you've transferred your data. It's likely to fail at some point, and you'll want to avoid losing everything! Getting an SSD for your OS and using the old HDD for extra storage may be your best bet.

While you can technically use the old HDD, I wouldn't recommend it as your system disk. HDDs are pretty slow—especially old laptop ones! It might be better to copy everything over to a faster drive, like an SSD, to build a new system that runs smoothly. If you do decide to connect it, just be cautious and have a backup because you never know when an old drive might give out.
