I'm currently using a MacBook that cost over $3000 as my main work computer, but I've built a powerful gaming PC for under $1000. Due to budget constraints, I can't afford two expensive computers. I'm considering flipping my setup: using the gaming PC as my main workstation for both work and gaming at home, while using a cheaper laptop when I'm away and remoting into the gaming PC. I'm curious if anyone has experience with this setup. How well does it work for you? Which software do you use for remote access, particularly with VS Code and its extensions? Are there any downsides? Also, I want to work using Windows and WSL – will that work fine for remote access, or is it better to set up a Linux partition on the gaming PC for work and just switch to Windows for gaming?

It's definitely workable! A lot of seasoned programmers I know have had modest setups and still kick butt. One of my colleagues still uses a ThinkPad from 2010 and he’s doing just fine!
You seem to have a great setup for learning! If you're worried about complications, consider using virtual machines on your MacBook to experiment with remote access. Plus, your gaming PC can be set up to run both Windows and Linux with virtual machines – it’s a flexible solution but keep an eye on your internet connection for smooth performance!
If you're into gaming too, Parsec is a solid option for remote access. Just remember, gaming performance on your laptop might not be as good as directly on the PC!
My wife needed remote access for her master's thesis and I let her use my overclocked gaming PC. Test execution times dropped from several days to just one or two! When it comes to bigger tasks now, I’d consider cloud options like AWS – there are more affordable solutions these days.
I've switched to using the Remote SSH extension in VS Code and X2Go along with a Linux terminal for my remote work. It covers 99% of my workflow and works great for me!
