Can I Use My Raspberry Pi 5 to Experiment with Linux?

I'm interested in trying out Linux for a few months before fully committing to the switch. Since my laptop is relatively new, I'm hesitant to dual boot. Luckily, I have a Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM and a 128GB SanDisk SD card. I'm planning on upgrading to an SSD soon. Is this setup enough to run Ubuntu for some light usage and basic coding?

You'll be just fine! With 16GB of RAM and a decent SD card, you should have a smooth experience. Just be aware that while running off an SD card is okay, it might be slower than using an SSD.

I'd recommend checking out Raspberry OS as it's optimized for Pi devices. It's got built-in tools that could be really handy. But if you really want to dive into Ubuntu, go for it – it’s generally just as good!

In short: yes. The Pi is quite powerful and can handle most coding tasks. Just keep in mind that some software may not be available for the ARM architecture, but you'll have a good time experimenting.

Yeah, absolutely! Your Raspberry Pi 5 is more than capable of running Linux. Many distributions, including Ubuntu, have ARM versions that will work well on your setup.

Definitely! Raspberry Pis are great for trying out Linux. Do consider that you'll experience some differences compared to standard x86 desktop systems, but overall, you should have a great learning experience!
