Can I Use Three RAM Sticks in a Four-Slot DDR5 Motherboard?

Hey all! I recently lost one of my RAM sticks, but I have a two-pack on the way. I'm wondering if I can still use the one stick that's still working alongside the new ones. Both sticks are Corsair 6000MTs CL36, with the only difference being that one has RGB. Will this setup cause any problems?

You can definitely use three sticks, but there's something to check. Depending on your motherboard, the two sticks might work in dual channel (CPUID will show quad channel for DDR5), while the third runs in single channel. If everything is running at the rated speed, you should be fine. Just know that if it ends up running all three in single channel, that might not be ideal, so you might want to remove the third stick in that case.

Thanks! The new ones arrive in 2 days, so I'll give it a shot.

You could just return both old sticks when the new RAM comes in.

That wouldn't work for me since I bought them from a second-hand PC, and I don't have any invoices or papers to return them.

Using three sticks usually means you'll lose XMP support. Unless you really need that extra capacity, maybe avoid it. By the way, Corsair memory typically has a limited lifetime warranty. Have you thought about checking that out? Also, remember that just because they’re both Corsair 6000MTs CL36, they might be different in terms of memory die used.

Unfortunately, I can't check the warranty because I bought it from a second-hand PC and don't have any invoices or papers from the sale. But I appreciate the tip about XMP!

I haven't used it myself, but I've heard that DDR5 RAM doesn't perform as well with more than dual channel setups.
