I accidentally spilled water on my desktop PC and let it air dry for about 24 hours. I'm worried there might still be residue on the motherboard. Would it be safe to spray it with an electronic cleaner like WD-40?

Don't stress too much! You can actually rinse the motherboard under tap water and then dry it in a low-temp oven—electronics are more resilient than you think. I've been in this field for years and have seen moisture issues handled without drama. Just let it air out after rinsing.

It's better to use a proper electronic contact cleaner, like WD-40 Specialist Contact Cleaner, or high-purity isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher). They work well for displacing water and removing any mineral deposits left behind. Just make sure to spray it directly on the motherboard for the best results.

You can definitely use the cleaner or isopropyl alcohol if you're worried. Another option is to grab some silica gel packets and place your motherboard in a ziplock bag with them for an extra day or two to absorb any moisture.

Just a heads up, WD-40 and WD-40 Contact Cleaner are different products. Make sure you use the right one for electronics.

Absolutely! WD contact cleaner dries quickly and helps to push out moisture, including harmful minerals. Just make sure to give it a good spray to clear any residues. I've even used isopropyl alcohol in ultrasonic machines to clean water-damaged phones!

So just to confirm, it's fine to spray directly on the motherboard, right?
