I've noticed that Active Directory seems heavily integrated with Azure Local. Is it essential to maintain AD DNS, or is it possible to fully transition to Azure DNS? For context, our end user devices are Entra Joined.

There's a new option called "AD-less" deployment for Azure Local that lets you use any DNS server you want. So yes, you could migrate away from AD DNS if you choose that route.
Actually, Active Directory isn't reliant on Azure Local at all. However, do remember that the nodes need to be joined to Active Directory, as that's a requirement for the cluster.
