Can You Build a Developer Career Without a Degree?

I'm nearing the end of my economics degree in a couple of months, but coding has really sparked my interest. Unfortunately, I didn't do well on my entrance exams for computer science and ended up in a field I'm not passionate about. I'm thinking about joining some coding bootcamps and possibly pursuing a master's related to tech. However, I've been browsing job listings and they all seem to require a computer science degree or equivalent. Plus, I've heard from friends with CS degrees who are still struggling to find jobs, even with great portfolios. Is it worth trying to break into tech without a degree these days?

Some people are suggesting that you might want to blend your economics background with tech. Have you thought about roles like Data Scientist or Quantitative Analyst? Combining skills can really make you stand out!

Getting a job without a degree is possible, but it’s definitely a tough road. You’ll need to showcase your skills through solid projects, especially since even graduates are facing challenges in landing positions right now due to a crowded market and the rise of AI in coding. It has become increasingly competitive, and it might get even trickier. So be prepared to put in the effort to stand out!

What about experienced developers without degrees? Are they still finding opportunities?

Answered By OldSchoolDev25 On

Absolutely, it can be done! I’ve been coding for over 25 years with just an associate's degree. Sure, it can be more challenging without a formal education, but a strong portfolio can often speak louder than a degree. Focus on proving your skills with practical experience, especially in areas like Node or Vue, which are in demand.

It’s definitely tough. I see plenty of entry-level positions asking for degrees, even roles like help desk jobs. The job market is demanding, and without a degree, getting noticed can be a challenge. But don't lose hope—just keep coding and applying!

Yeah, I mean, even those with degrees are finding it hard. Just keep learning and you might find the right opening.

It’s possible to get into development without a degree, but you’ll face an uphill battle. With many experienced people being laid off and applying for the same roles, the competition is fierce. Keep honing your skills and network as much as you can; that could give you a leg up.
