I need some clarity on a laptop situation we have. My dad recently bought a Dell 14+ 2-in-1 laptop directly from Dell's website and built it to our specifications. Upon setting it up, we discovered that it came with a free one-year subscription of McAfee, but when we tried to open it, it asked for details linked to the email address [email protected]. We have no idea who that is, leading us to suspect that this 'brand new' computer might actually be pre-owned. How can that be possible when we specifically ordered it as new?

Your best bet is to contact Dell directly about this issue. They should be able to resolve it or at least provide you with more information about what happened.
Unfortunately, it sounds like your computer was likely owned by someone else before you. If it has anyone else's information linked to it, you should definitely send it back for a refund or an exchange.
It’s possible they pulled a unit from their returns that didn’t get wiped properly. Definitely call them, and insist on a refund if that’s what you want. You deserve a proper new device.
Another possibility is that the previous owner’s software key was mistakenly not cleared. Dell might be able to correct this, so it's worth checking with them. Plus, checking the S.M.A.R.T. data on the drive could provide insight into its usage history.
It sounds like you may have indeed received a used laptop. Companies like Dell can sometimes send out returned items that are still in good condition, but shouldn’t be labeled as 'brand new'. You could either return it or reinstall Windows to clean it of the pre-installed software, which often isn’t useful.
Yeah, it's frustrating when companies do that. It’s a good idea to always reinstall Windows anyway, it gets rid of all the bloatware.
