Hey everyone! I'm in the process of building a new AM5 gaming rig and need some advice on which CPU to go for. My options are: the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for $469, but with a coupon, it comes down to $449 and includes a free Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro SE wireless mouse. The other option is the Ryzen 7 9850X3D priced at $499. Both CPUs have 8 cores and are amazing for gaming. I'm focusing mostly on gaming, especially competitive shooters like Arc Raiders, running at 1440p with a 240Hz OLED display, paired with an RTX 5070 Ti. I'm not into heavy content creation or rendering. I've read that the performance difference in gaming between the two is pretty small. I'm just wondering if the 9850X3D justifies the extra cost in the long run, or if I'd be better off with the 9800X3D, especially considering the free mouse. What would you choose and why? I'd appreciate any insights!

For competitive shooters, you'll see a minor difference between the two CPUs. But if you're not planning to tweak your settings, the 9800X3D is definitely the way to go for value. I only chose the 9850X3D because I enjoy tuning my rig, and I expect better memory performance from it.
If you're in the USA, I saw the 9800X3D going for around $400 with a motherboard deal. That's pretty enticing if you're looking to save a bit!
I'd go for the 9800X3D and maybe sell the mouse if you don't want it. It’s a solid deal, especially at $449!

Is the 9850X3D really better with 6400 RAM though?
