I'm having issues with my kids' computer. It boots up and logs in fine, but then the screen goes black. Here's what I've noticed: the mouse works, but most apps open off-screen, as if the display settings changed. I can't access settings, and I can't use the Windows search. I did manage to run Microsoft Defender and received a warning about something suspicious. Has anyone experienced this before? How can I resolve it?

It sounds like you might be experiencing a display issue. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you can adjust the resolution or default display settings from there. Sometimes, booting three times can trigger Windows to go into special mode where you can choose options like low-resolution screen. Just power off the computer while it's starting up three times in a row to trigger that mode. Good luck!
Have you tried connecting the computer to a different monitor? If it's a laptop, also make sure the brightness is turned up. Sometimes, it's just a simple display issue that can be fixed that way.
I've seen this before, but in your case, it seems like it boots up fine. Maybe check if there are multiple display outputs turned on? That could explain why apps seem to open off-screen.
