Considering a Permanent Switch to Linux – Need Advice on Dual Boot vs. VM

I've been a Windows user for most of my life, but recently I've been developing some C projects on Ubuntu Linux, and I've really enjoyed it. My laptop has only one SSD, so if I want to keep using Windows for some necessary proctoring software for my studies, I'll need to get a bigger SSD and set up a dual boot. I'm curious if there are any downsides to partitioning my SSD besides just needing to allocate space. Would it be better to run a Windows VM on Linux instead of dual booting?

I think a Windows VM would be less hassle since you won’t have to reboot all the time or mess with partitioning. As long as your tasks don't require heavy graphics performance, it should run smoothly with the right CPU resources allocated.

Running a Windows VM can work well for many tasks, so it might be a good choice for you. But if you prefer to dual boot, I do that off one SSD and haven't had any major issues.

If you're worried about dual booting, consider installing Linux on a new SSD and using a SATA to USB cable to boot from it. This way, you minimize the risk of messing up your Windows installation. Plus, having one OS per SSD can simplify things a lot!
