Considering an RTX 5070 Upgrade for My Old i7 7700K PC – Should I Go for It?

Hey everyone! I've had my PC for over 7 years now with these specs: i7-7700K CPU, GTX 1080 GPU, Thermaltake 730W PSU, an ASUS Strix H270F motherboard, and 16GB of 2400MHz RAM. I'm looking to upgrade and have two options. The first is to build a new PC with a Ryzen 5 7500F and a 5060 Ti 16GB. The second option is to get an RTX 5070 now and use it with my current setup for a bit, then build a new PC around it once I save up some more money in about 4-5 months. I know there will be a bottleneck since my motherboard is PCIe Gen 3 and my CPU isn't the latest, but I'm mostly using my PC for programs like Blender, Premiere Pro, and After Effects, with only some light gaming on the side. I'm also concerned about whether the 5070 would even work well with my old setup, what issues I might face, and if it's worth it considering the high cost of the 5070 compared to the 5060 Ti. Any advice or experiences would really help me out! Thanks!

Honestly, if you can hold off for a bit, it might be better to save a bit more and build a complete new system. That way, you could aim for an even better GPU later on, and it’ll be a more powerful setup overall.

I think you should go for the RTX 5070 now and upgrade the rest of your rig later. Just make sure to aim for a good CPU like a Ryzen 9600X when you do. It’s a solid plan and you’ll benefit from the better GPU right away!

Totally agree! Getting a nice GPU first makes sense, and you can build the new system when you're ready.

Just a thought, but if you can, it might be wise to wait for the 5070 Super, which should have even more VRAM.

The RTX 5070 will run just fine on your PCIe 3.0 motherboard, as long as you don’t max out its VRAM. The bottleneck will hit more from the CPU side when pushing higher frame rates, especially in newer games.

Honestly, I've seen setups similar to yours upgrade smoothly with the 5070. Just keep in mind that your old PSU might struggle with the 5070, so consider replacing that alongside the GPU!

I hear you on the PSU! I wouldn’t trust a 7-year-old PSU with a new powerful GPU either.

If you’re gaming at 2k or 4k, the bottleneck won’t be as noticeable. But for 1080p, your CPU might hold you back a bit, so just keep that in mind when playing newer titles!
