Considering Switching from Windows to Linux – What Should I Know?

I'm thinking about leaving Windows behind because my experience with Windows 11 has been frustrating. I recently tried Linux Mint on my old 2014 Mac mini, and it's been a game changer—turning it into a functional media center for gaming with my family. However, my main setup consists of a B850 MSI motherboard, 32GB DDR5 RAM, a 7800X3D processor, a 240mm AIO cooler, and I'm using a 2070 Super GPU. My primary activities include gaming, CAD/CAM projects in Fusion 360, and 3D printing. I'm curious if most of my software will work smoothly on Linux Mint or if there's a better distro out there for running Windows programs. Would I be able to get at least 90% of my Windows software functionality?

Before making the switch, you might want to boot Linux Mint from a USB stick just to test how it performs. It's a great way to check if your hardware plays nice without installing anything yet.

I'm a bit unsure how that works. If I boot Linux Mint from USB, can I still access Steam that’s already installed on my Windows 11?
