I'm having a tough time getting Wine to work on my HP desktop with Linux Mint. Everything seems fine initially, but when I try to load Windows programs, Wine acts like it's starting up without any results. I've even tried switching to Xubuntu, thinking it might be my Mint setup, but the same problem persists. It's as if Wine is just stalling out. I then switched to Q4OS, and again, Wine didn't show any signs of working. It doesn't show up in the start menu, nor does it run when I try to launch it through 'Open with'. I'm beginning to wonder if there's a hardware issue affecting Wine's performance because I can run the same distros and Wine successfully on other machines. I'm getting pretty frustrated since I only need to run a couple of minor Windows programs on this setup. I can't provide hardware specs at the moment since I'm at work and the computer is at home.

When you run Wine from the terminal, what do you see? Try the command `wine notepad.exe` to check if it launches. You might also want to install winetricks just in case.
Using Wine usually involves managing it with a GUI or tools like winetricks instead of just launching Windows programs directly. Have you tried using Lutris or Bottles? They can help set things up more smoothly.
If you're still having trouble, consider trying Zorin OS. It has Wine and Bottles pre-configured, making everything much simpler with just a single click to run.
