Could My iPhone Data Usage Be a Sign of Hacking?

I'm really stressed out this week after receiving a fake spam email claiming that my iPhone had been hacked. The email said they installed a virus, accessed my camera, and demanded Bitcoin from me, but I recognized it as a scam. Still, it made me worried about my phone's security. Now, when I check my data usage, it's showing an outrageous 3TB for this month, which seems impossible because I'm usually on my home Wi-Fi while working from home. A lot of the usage, about 1TB, is attributed to 'other devices' on my phone's hotspot, but I never noticed anything connected since the green linking icon doesn't show up. Additionally, a couple of weeks ago, my phone overheated, and the camera kept opening on its own multiple times before I restarted it enough for it to stop. I just did a factory reset and restored everything from iCloud, but I'm still uneasy and need some reassurance that my data is safe and I wasn't actually hacked. Thanks in advance for any help!

It's unlikely you've been hacked, especially if your iPhone is fully updated. What version of iOS are you on? Also, about the camera opening by itself, it’s possible you had a glitch or a misbehaving app. Just keep your software updated and monitor your device. You should be in the clear!

I have auto updates turned on, so I should be good there. When the camera was acting weird, it kept launching itself even when I wasn’t touching my phone. It was just sitting on the table! Super strange.

If you did a factory reset and restored from iCloud, your data should mostly be safe, as long as you didn’t restore any suspicious apps that might have caused your issues. Just stay vigilant and have strong passwords for your accounts!

That data usage sounds concerning, but it could also be a miscalculation or glitch from the cellular carrier. Check if there’s a way to reset your data usage statistics on your settings. Just keep an eye on it. If it jumps again, then you might want to contact your service provider!
