Do I Really Need ESD Precautions for Installing an SSD?

I'm gearing up to install a Samsung 990 EVO Plus SSD into an OWC Express 1M2 enclosure for some external storage fun. These parts are brand new, but I don't have any anti-static gear on hand. I've heard folks say that modern components come with some protection against static discharge, so I'm wondering: can I safely skip the ESD precautions, or should I take the effort to ground myself somehow?

You'll be just fine! Today's hardware is way more resilient to ESD issues than it was a decade ago.

That might be true, but the size of components nowadays is also smaller, which could mean they're more sensitive to static!

Definitely a good idea to ground yourself now and then, just to be safe!

That's quite a track record! Gives me confidence to skip the ESD stuff, but still good to know about grounding.

I've been working in IT for over 20 years and never bothered with ESD precautions. I've worked on tons of machines, and it's never been a problem for me at all.

Honestly, you probably don't need ESD gear for installing your SSD. Just make sure you're careful; things like the type of carpet in your room could matter. Before you start, try grounding yourself by touching something metal that's earthed. Keep your hands off the circuit boards and you'll be golden!

Using ESD gear is largely optional. Think of it as wearing a life vest while boating; it's good to have but not strictly necessary. If you're in a dry, carpeted room and wearing synthetic clothes, you're more likely to create static, so using ESD protection can be smart. That said, the risk of damaging your SSD without it is pretty low. Just remember to touch the metal case of your computer to ground yourself before starting, especially if it's unplugged!

Just make sure the PC is off and unplugged while you're working!

That makes sense! So, taking precautions can't hurt, right?
