Could This Job Offer Be a Scam?

I recently got laid off from a job I loved and have been actively applying for jobs everywhere. Out of nowhere, I received a phone call about a position with Dell. The caller claimed to be recruiting for them and mentioned a role to manage a team from another country. They asked me to send my resume via email after our call, promising that their manager would review it and get back to me later in the week.

Today, the caller reached out again, stating that the manager would call me shortly to discuss the position further. When the manager called, I agreed to chat, but they quickly said that if I didn't have more than a few minutes, then I wasn't fit for the job…and then they hung up.

Now I'm left wondering if this was a setup for a scam. I've heard stories about scammers asking for application fees and the initial caller mentioned needing a Scrum Master certification. Could this be a cover for some fake course? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

This definitely seems suspect. Dell doesn't usually hire for roles like Scrum Masters directly. If they reach out again, I’d suggest steering clear and not engaging further.

Yeah, that’s what I suspected as well. Appreciate the heads up!

Honestly, it sounds like a weird situation, but I’m not sure if it’s a scam. Most scammers usually try harder to keep you engaged rather than just hanging up on you immediately after a brief chat. Maybe it's just a rude manager at a legit company?

That could be! Or they might be trying to create a sense of urgency to pressure someone who's desperate for a job. It's tough to say for sure.

Hanging up on someone is a strange tactic for a scam, but it certainly raises some red flags. If their approach feels off, you should trust your gut. Plus, I’m not sure Dell randomly calls candidates like that.

Right? I mean, external recruiters might reach out, but I doubt Dell does this directly. Just be careful with your next steps.
