CPU Overheating During Gaming: Is It Normal or a Problem?

Hey everyone! I recently set up a second-hand Lenovo laptop for a friend and noticed that the CPU gets extremely hot, especially when playing League of Legends. While testing, I saw temperatures rise to around 70°C in the main menu and even hit 90°C during gameplay, sometimes peaking at 100°C. Despite these high temperatures, the game runs perfectly without any performance issues. I've checked and confirmed that the laptop is plugged in, has proper airflow, and the fans are working. Drivers and Windows are all updated too. I also performed some benchmarks and noticed that while the CPU usage is high, the GPU usage seems low. Could this be a thermal paste issue, or is there something else going on with the GPU? How can I approach fixing this?

Just a heads-up, UserBenchMark isn't the best tool for assessing performance or thermal issues. It can give misleading results. If you're still curious about the GPU's performance, try using a different benchmarking tool that’s widely trusted. As for the thermal paste, since your laptop is pretty new, it’s less likely to be an issue, but if you feel comfortable, checking it wouldn’t hurt.

Honestly, the temperatures you've described are normal for heavy gaming sessions, especially with a powerful laptop like yours. If the performance is smooth and you're not facing any shutdowns, your system is likely handling heat levels okay. Just make sure your vents are clean and consider using a cooling pad if you're concerned.

It sounds like you're experiencing thermal throttling, which is actually quite common in gaming laptops. While your CPU is getting hot, it's functioning as it should by reducing speed to prevent damage. Those temps can be standard under load for a powerful system, so you may not need to worry too much unless you're experiencing crashes. However, keeping an eye on cooling and considering reapplying thermal paste if the laptop feels unusually hot over time could be worth it.
